I changed my mind about doing business with them once I mailed my contract back to them. I explained to them that my family would be devastated if I had the book published. They told me I still had to go on with it regardless because we signed a mutual contract.
Neither Publish America or I have invested any money in this project. We have only been swopping e-mails. I begged them to let me go and they won't release me. I also was told the contract does not offer the author any leaveway or rights. My lawyer viewed it and found the contract unjust and felt sorry for me for not being knowledgeable of the embalance to the publisher and the author. They asked for a copy of my social security number to be sent with contract.
I thought they were a traditional publishing company. But I've learned they are a print-on-demand company. Something I did not want to be involved with. Prior to signing the contract I had searched the web to see if they were legitimate. I found nothing negative until I signed the contract. I immediate asked to be released. They denied the possibility. Why can't I change my mind? The contract is supposedly completed when I receive a dollar check for royalties. We are no where close to that stage of the contract. Also I didn't know I had to do so much work such as editing and type-setting for my book. That was not mentioned in the contract.

Yes, trying to get out of a legal contract after you have signed it is not too swift. But as far as PA publishing junk, I happen to know that many PA authors are authors who don't know much about the industry and are fooled by what they read on PA.com.
Am I one such individual? Yes. Does my book (Past the Point of Delirium) suck? No, actually it does not. Now that I know more about the publishing industry, will I be seeking other means for my future work? You bet your sweet a*s. LOL

Did you contact your lawyer before or after you signed PA's contract? If before, why did you sign and mail the contract and then seek a lawyer's advice? If after, why would you mail the contract at all?
You stated that you didn't know you would have to do so much work (editing and type-setting). Oh, please. Refining your work is your job, not a publishing agency. They may do some editing for you, but that burden belongs to the author.
Most people are attracted to PA because they've been rejected by all other reputable book publishing agencies. This should have given you a clue.
That you're angry about having to edit your own work gives the rest of us a clue. You sought and found an easy way out of doing the work necessary to become a real writer.
PA publishes junk that will never sell to the general public. This is why they print on demand. You won't find a PA book in any bookstore.
I'm sorry you feel PA took you in, but you should have known better. All the warning signs were there. You simply failed to heed them in your quest to become a "published author".
