Background: I enrolled in Ameritrain for two courses in April of 2000. MCSE for Windows NT 4.0 and Novell Netware 5.0. The NT 4.0 course went fine. I was told that the Novell Netware class wouldn't start for awhile and I had up to two (2) years to complete the second course.

I called back occasionally to check on the Novell class with no luck. Now we are into 2001 and still no Novell class. Ameritrain kept reassuring me that I still had time to complete my second class. In December of 2001 I was told by Ameritrain that the Novell class had been discontinued and that I could enroll in the Solaris 8 class or the MCSE for Windows 2000.

I chose the MCSE for Windows 2000 and was told that I would have to get approval because it was $8600.00. I had originally paid only $7500.00 for both classes. I was called back and told that I could take that course. Enrollment was for March of 2002. Three weeks into the course I had to rephase because of 12 hours shifts at work. Ameritrain said no problem, you are allowed one rephase.

New class started on July 16, 2002. Classes were to meet on Tuesdays for 4 hours and all day Saturday. Class met the first Tuesday. Instructor said that he wouldn't be there for the Saturday class. No class Saturday. The following Tuesday we had class, but with a different instructor. New instructor said that old instructor had quit.

The following Saturday, arrived at Ameritrain to find the building locked. Stood outside with other students for 30 minutes before leaving. The following Tuesday, same situation. Tried calling other locations in PA and Atlanta with no help. The following Saturday was the same. Building locked.

Checked the Ameritrain Website and saw that the Columbia office was closed. Contacted Ms. Judy Hendrickson of Maryland Higher Education Commission and added my name to the long list of students. She sent out a survey which I filled out and sent back. Called her back for an update and was told that Sallie Mae was paying for students to attend training elsewhere but I wasn't shown as being a student at the time of closure.

In conclusion: I am stuck paying the initial $7500.00 plus interest for two courses when I have only received one. Next step is to find out why I wasn't on Sallae Mae's list as being a student at the time of closure. More to follow.

Still Looking for Justice

AUTHOR: Lee - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 23, 2004

I have been talking to a Ms. Melanie Portman at Sallie Mae. She has asked that I send her any paperwork which shows that I was actively enrolled in courses at Ameritrain when it closed. I sent her the same paperwork that I sent Ms. Heather Griffif. Ms. Portman says that she is working with Ms. Griffif. I have grown tired of all of this. After watching my balance go up continually, I have decided to pay off the loan. I have also contacted Sallie Mae to see if I could at least get the balance reduced. I called Ms. Portman to ask if she had received the paperwork that was faxed and she replied that she had. I paid $5000 on the loan last week. That leaves only $955 and some change left to pay. I don't feel that I should have to pay any of the balance but at the same time, I don't want them to keep reporting me as delinquent to the credit bureaus. I called Ms. Portman this morning and left a message. Waiting on a call-back. I want to believe that there are still some decent people in the world. The verdict is still out as far as individuals working at Sallie Mae. More to follow!

Doug Davis Does It Again

AUTHOR: Linda - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, December 30, 2002

This is the second time Doug has closed a school...he was part owner of another school in the Philadelphia area...he cheated, deceived and lied to the other owners and, with his "winnings" opened Ameritrain in Tyson's Corner, VA. I am a former employee and have known Doug and Steve Gouveia for many years...their motto has always been "F... em" to both students and employees.

There were many ways to close down Ameritrain... I believe his way was raunchy and gives other computer schools a bad reputation.

SLM Financial and Keyloan are attempting to help students and schools by giving them loans...in most cases students receive a tremendous discount for allowing schools to receive monies up front--please don't blame them for what unethical scum buckets (like Davis) do.

I appeal to all former Ameritrain students not to rest until Doug Davis is in jail. He has committed fraud...he knew he was closing and continued to take students' money. He needs to be held accountable for his actions--otherwise, he'll just open up another school and rip off more people. Let Doug know that this time, it's "F... him" instead.

I also wanted to comment on an article which was in the Washington Post wherein Aaron Harclerode, former Regional IT Director for A-train stated that he wished to dissassociate himself from the whole ordeal...gee Aaron, I'm surprised to hear you say that since you and Steve were the biggest suck-ups this side of the Mississippi and were responsible for getting numerous people fired...

Sallie Mae receives requested paperwork

AUTHOR: - ()

POSTED: Monday, December 23, 2002

Hello, me again. Update to ongoing saga. Just faxed over paperwork that was requested. Request was to fax over any paperwork which shows that I was currenlty enrolled in a class when the school closed it's doors. I sent the original enrollment form showing the start date. I also enclosed the enrollment form showing my 1 rephase and the date of the new class (July 16, 2002 Tuesday/Saturday). Also sent two emails from the then IT Director Alice Peek to myself concerning the class. Called Heather Griffif to make sure she had received the fax. Fax was received. Will check back with her after Christmas to get an answer as to whether I will be added to the list of eligible students for the teach-out. More to follow.

Sallie Mae Responds

AUTHOR: - ()

POSTED: Wednesday, December 18, 2002

I called Sallie Mae Financial and talked to a Heather Griffif. I asked why wasn't I included in the list of students attending classes with Ameritrain when they closed. She pulled up my loan paperwork and said that, since my loan was financed back in April of 2000, and the loan paperwork said that all classes would be completed in 4 months, I wouldn't be included on the list of those students qualifying for a teach-out.

So in-fact what they are saying is this: we don't care if the school gives you 2 years to complete the training, we are only going to be responsible for the training for 4 months.

She did tell me to send her all related paperwork and she would give it to her supervisor for a final determination as to whether I get added to the list or not. If so, she said that she would call Judy Hendrickson at MHEC and tell her to add my name.

Next step: Fax all associated paperwork to Sallie Mae and await their decision. More to follow.
