I scammer told me to purchase a Google Play Card for $500.00 and take it to Social Security Office because my ID was stolen and needed to be replaced by new documents for which I needed to post a Bond via such cards. This store had one card that was sold to me for cash and its cash register told me not to share the digits on the card with any one over phone because I could lose the money.

I purchase another company's three cards from Publix store for $1,500.00 cash. Then scammer on phone told me to give the card information on back. I refused and told him I needed to go to Social security Office. If they confirm, I will do next steps. I went there and I was told this was a common scam and if I gave no such information my money was safe. I went to Publix store and told their Manager how everything happened and now I need money back.

Publix refunded my money after getting permission from their HQ, getting my details etc. But CVS ruther Glen Virginia has not refunded my money despite the confirmation from Google Play that they originated the sale so CVS can make a refund. I am told by CVS to wait and it has been over ten days. I am 71 year old and can not see why the money that the scammer could not get from me should be retained by this evil Corporate Body. I asked them do you treat your grandpa in this way? 

I am posting here with hope that some one from CVS top brass will try to help me because my attempts to reach him have not been fruitful. PLEASE HELP . MANY THANKS !!!

Refund from CVS

Yes finally I did get my money refunded at the store in Ruther Glen Virginia. It took many days but I am happy to have my money. I have learned a lot and hope my posting will educate everyone to be careful about such scams.

For me I never knew what this cards mean, just my ignorance. I want to thank every one at this web site for providing a platform that make Companies pay attention to situatios that happen out of box. Please close the file.

CVS is notoriously bad for being able to obtain refunds in the form of cash - normally they provide such things as credit - primarily in the pharmacy.  If you have the need for pharmacy services, and if you are unable to get cash, then perhaps CVS pharmacy credits might work for you, and would be usable as cash within CVS.

As a general rule, never obtain a google or other gift card at the demand of someone over a phone for whatever reason they say - no matter how reasonable their request is or sounds like, you are being scammed.  The bottom line is this:  No one, and I mean no one transacts legitimate business  of any kind using a google or other cash card as payment.

Thanks for writing in with your thoughts. Do not know if you work for CVS or are a general public. I wonder if you have any stake in this issue or just putting in your two cents. Would be better to know that.But you seem to be defending CVS without any empathy to a victim like me. You fail to notice that Google Play said CVS can process the refund and they know how to follow the process.

I am aware that CVS is only a conduit and money goes to Google, the issuer of the card. That by refunding CVS may not make any commission that it makes when sale has been cancelled. That is why I offerred CVS a service charge for the trouble taken.

Trouble is at store level there is no one that has power to decide anything. On the day sale happened, I went back before even the shift closed and I know for fact that the sale entry could be voided without much problem because the transaction was still at store level.

I still maintain CVS by not making any efforts to get the refund authorised etc is ripping me off for sake of the small commission they need to sacrifice. You may also note that Google is not refusing refund. They said the verification of status of card etc can be easily done by the agent who sold it and then issue refund. So from where you got that Google is refusing refund? It is the callous attitude of CVS that is the problem here.  I hope the Head Honcho at CVS would take notice of the issue and work to improve standards of how to handle out of box situations. After all out of may be a hundred thousand transactions a day at all CVS stores only a handful like this may occur and if it does not know how to justly handle them, it will be headed for trouble because good word spreads slowly and bad word spreads like wild fire. This issue will be soon in more venues but hopefully the officials at CVS will let me have my money back after completing their research which seems still in back rooms of corporate vines.

We may meet again for your insights shared with me and general public. Beware when you transact at CVS is all I can think of now.

Good for CVS

Your anger and frustration is misdirected. You first should be thanking CVS because it was their warning that saved you from handing over at least $2000 to scammers. I say at least because it is very likely that after you had handed them over the first set of cards they would have had you send over additional cards costing you more money.

Now as for the refund. It is great that Publix refunded the cards as that is not a general policy on ANY type of these cards. But this does not mean that CVS is Ripping you off. Remember how you got into this situation......

You also failed to mention the cards you purchased from Publix, but generally these scammers go for cards such as ITunes or Amazon in addition to Google and they may have different policies on the cards than the Google Play cards. Also remember that CVS is not retaining this money. Yes they get a portion of the sale of the card, but they still have to send a majority of it back to Google. So again if Google is refusing a refund, CVS(or any business) can't really be expected to take a loss just because you are a grandpa.

Hope it works out for you and you are eventually able to get some sort of credit back, but at the very least you should be thankful that it wasn't a lot worse than it has turned out to be.
